Pimp my Spice Cabinet
It’s been two weeks since we closed on our house and as the previous owner’s son said ‘BEHOLD….THE epic spice cabinet!’ I think there was some light glowing on it and I may have heard some baking fairies singing too.
Our spice cabinet is pretty cool in that it has a two sided built-in organizer. It was funny because Dave and I were discussing how it would be cool to add something like that, and then what do you know, it was already there? We have a similar pull out drawer system for the pots, pans, mixing bowls etc.
Since I love Social Media, I thought, why not crowdsource our new spice cabinet? We have the super basics, and I have been compiling a list of things to buy while we’re out shopping when things go on sale. We’ve thought about hitting up Penzeys in the Strip District (area just outside of Downtown Pittsburgh) for maybe some niche items, but we’re just as happy with store brand garlic powder, cinnamon, etc.
So here I am asking YOU the Internet, my readers – what are your favorites to have in the spice cabinet (or pantry carryovers)? What should we have? We both bake, cook, try and eat almost any cuisine.
Here’s what we already have:
- Baking Soda
- Nutmeg (the REAL stuff)
- Kosher Salt
- Black Peppercorns (most likely will get a medley of other colors)
- Italian Seasoning
- Crushed Red Pepper
- Garlic Powder
- Mrs. Dash
- Soy Sauce
- Teriyaki Sauce
- Rice Wine Vinegar
- Worcestershire Sauce
- Olive Oil
Our meager shopping list:
(To the bottom left – previous spice cabinet leftovers that went to @Fotocuisine’s house)
- Cinnamon
- Salt (regular)
- Baking Powder
- Sesame Oil
- Vanilla extract
- Five Spice powder
- Chili powder
- Red Wine vinegar
- Champagne vinegar
- Honey
- Corn Starch
- Corn Syrup
- Curry powder
What should our family have? What do we need? We bake, cook, try and eat almost any cuisine between two adults and 2 young children. Leave me your whys, hows, brands or just a list. Thank you so much!!! This should be fun!

Mirin to add to the rice vinegar if you want to make sushi rice.
Onion powder
Cayenne/red pepper
Marjoram
Cumin!
Celery salt (for Bloody Mary’s)

Stuff to use in a pinch when you run out of the fresh stuff:
Ginger powder
Dried thyme (leaves, not powder)
Dried dill
Dried basil
I’m sure I’ll remember more… We suddenly acquired a ton of spices a couple months ago for some reason….
Here’s what I’d add:
Coriander
Cumin
Tumeric
Spanish Pimenton
Brown Mustard Seeds
Cardamon
Star Anise
Cloves
Fleur de sel
Kosher Salt
Bay Leaves
Oregano
Basil
Garlic Salt/Powder
