Consider the Lily’s – Top 8 Allergen Friendly Bakery
In the words of my child “Mmm! Mommy these are so delicious!!!!”
This is a quick review of the top 8 allergen friendly bakery, Consider the Lily’s whom bake in New Castle, PA. I had plans this particular day that took me near Soergel’s so I figured I’d stop in to look around, and to visit Naturally Soergel’s to buy some allergen friendly snacks and Valentine’s treats. Luckily for me, it was Customer Appreciation Day, and a few business were offering samples as well inside the store.
I made a bee line for the Consider the Lily’s table and product offerings. I have been intrigued since they announced themselves in late fall of 2018. Finding allergen friendly baked goods that as good as mainstream bakeries or homemade goods is difficult. After a few quick introductions and one quick mouthful of a mini chocolate cupcake with strawberry frosting I was sold! I love, love, LOVE a good butter cream or frosting, but “Wow!” that strawberry frosting was amazing and dairy free – WHAT? The four of us talked a bit, and realized we had more than a few things in common (besides baking and food allergies)! I bought a variety of items to bring home, because I was excited to share with the rest of my family!
The Final Results
Our favorites were the cupcakes and cookie cake, followed by the hand pies (especially the apple). I can not speak much about the sugar cookies, since we do not regularly eat them and during this review we only had a sample. We all agreed the sugar cookie was “okay,” but again sugar cookies are not a dessert I actively eat.
The frosting was AMAZING, and rivals any traditional buttercreams made with butter. The wrong frosting can ruin the best of cakes. In addition to the strawberry frosting, we enjoyed a cupcake with the chocolate frosting as well – which was equally delicious.
The cake portions of the cupcakes were right amounts of dry and moist, which my husband has been trying to explain to me what he wants in a cupcake. Cakes should be moist and soft, while a cupcake should be just a bit drier to hold the frosting and not get lost in a gummy mess. I would love to just eat a vat of either of these frostings, or maybe just a chocolate cupcake with chocolate frosting because that combination would be ACE!
My kids were stunned and amazed by the dessert samples. That evening, and on random days after my child with the food allergy had many questions.
- “HOW are all these foods safe? Are you sure? How do the bakers do this? You’re sure it’s ALL safe right”
- “Who is Lily?”
- “If I wanted cookie cake at school, how would – I mean you, send it? Does it need refrigerated, wrapped?”
I love baking, and admittedly have not tried other allergen friendly bakeries in the area, but Consider the Lily’s are the mark I will compare everyone else to.
Balance
Then in the name of balance, I walked out and bought some apples next door. Soergel’s had quite a variety of apples to pick from and so I made my own mixed bag to bring home.
